Oxjam Headquarters encourage their Team Managers to raise money by being sponsored to do things for their charity. A lot of people do live below the line, where they get sponsored to live on £1 per day, but I decided to shave my head. I did this because I knew I could raise a lot of sponsorship given the value and importance people place on their hair, especially as part of the image they want to portray.
Oxjam is all based around music so as well as having my head shaved I also recruited some local musicians to come along and busk on the day. I wanted to have as much footfall as possible so looked into getting permission to hold the event at some of the busiest places in the city. In the end I decided on doing it at The Kissing Wall on Brighton seafront. I organised getting the relevant licence that enable me to collect money in the street and set out a running order for the day. I worked with my volunteer coordinator to ensure there were enough people working with us on the day to collect money and raise awareness of what we were doing. I had got a sponsor to provide business card sized flyers for the Takeover in October so we used these to help publicise that event while we raised money.
Stephan Rault from Hair Du Jour agreed to give up part of his Sunday to come and do the head shaving and helped me raise money by also supervising people who had paid £5 to take a turn on the clippers and help shave my head.
The day was a great success and I even recruited a rival busker to the cause, in the end I raised just short of £1000.00
